The Greater Santa Barbara Ice Skating Association (GSBISA), a non-profit organization, has implemented a $6 million dollar fundraising campaign for the construction of Santa Barbara County's only state-of-the-art ice skating facility. Santa Barbara County has a diverse community with a large number of youth and families. Studies show that the area is deficient in recreational facilities. As a non-profit skating facility, this much needed project will provide year-round recreational outlets for children, teens, adults and families.
In 1997, the Camino Real Marketplace received governmental approval including approval for development of a 44,000-sq. ft. ice-rink next to Girsh Park. The developer, Wynmark Co., has already installed infrastructure improvements including mains, storm drains and a parking lot.
A group of dedicated local business people came together in 2001 and formed the GSBISA to finish what had been started and make this dream a reality. In the beginning, GSBISA was an affiliate of the PARC Foundation, but now GSBISA has secured its own 501(c)(3) non-profit status.
GSBISA has completed a preliminary feasibility study and in conjunction with local architect, David Van Hoy, is working on the final design phase of the project. If this project is not successful, Santa Barbara County will lose an extraordinary recreational venue and the land will be sold or developed for other purposes.
This ice skating facility will provide a variety of recreational activities for Santa Barbara youth and our community.
